Anat Marin in her Los Angeles atelier

The designer

Anat Marin was born and raised in Israel and moved to the United States in 1990. She spent the first part of her career as an interior designer, where she learned to think in proportion, texture and light — the same instincts that now shape every bag. The handbags began as pieces she made for herself from exotic skins; friends and clients kept asking for their own, and in 2004 she launched the collection.

A way of seeing

“I look at each of my creations as a piece of art.” That sentence, from one of her earliest profiles, is still the clearest description of how Anat works. A bag is drawn, cut and finished in her Los Angeles atelier, with the skin chosen first and the silhouette built around it, so the grain, the scales and the natural markings decide the final character of each piece. No two are alike.

Materials and craft

The house works in fine leathers and genuine exotic skins — crocodile, alligator, python, ostrich, stingray and water snake — and finishes each piece with its signature details: custom hardware, natural stones set into the leather, and hand-stitched edges. The collection has grown from handbags into belts, wallets, cuffs and other accessories, for women and for men, always with the same restraint: strong shapes, honest materials, nothing added that does not need to be there.

Feminine, individual, assured

Anat designs for a woman who dresses for herself. The bags are made to be carried for years and to look better for it; the exotic skins and stones give each one a presence that does not depend on a logo. The men’s line follows the same thinking in quieter proportions. From trade-magazine covers to the red carpet and the runway, the pieces have been photographed on people who wear them exactly that way.

The boutique

The Anat Marin boutique opened in Calabasas, California, in July 2012. Alongside the collection it holds the other side of Anat’s practice — sculptures, large leather-framed mirrors and candle holders, all made by hand in the studio — so the shop reads less like a store and more like a working designer’s home.
